Learn How You Could Manage Your Dental Anxiety
It’s time for your next dental cleaning, and you are actually looking forward to it. You may not have thought that was possible.
That also was before you started coming to River Oaks Dental. Meeting Dr. Rachel Monteiro and the rest of our team has really helped you feel more at ease about going to the dentist.
Dental anxiety was a real issue you for you for many years — too many. Visiting our office in Jacksonville, FL was a real eye-opener, and it changed your view of what it means to get dental care.
Does that sound too good to be true? Well, we’ve helped many patients learn to manage their anxiety and fear with our approach to care. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call us at 904-299-8951.
You Aren’t Alone
Fear of the dentist is far more common than many people realize. By some estimates as many as 3 out of every 4 people experience dental anxiety to some degree. One in 10 people is so anxious that even making a dental appointment make seem too difficult at times.
Dr. Monteiro and our staff understand this, which is why we focus on what we like to call relaxation dentistry. Your comfort (both physical and mental) is as important to us as your oral health. One of the first things we like to do is get to know our patients. We want you to see us as an extended part of your family. If you have questions or concerns about our approach to dentistry or about a particular procedure, we’ll be happy to address them with you.
Before you begin your treatment, we want to help you relax. It’s why we are happy to offer a cup of herbal tea or fruit-infused water to enjoy while you wait. Take a moment in our massage chair, too. And if you would like a distraction during your next cleaning, we can turn on one of your favorite televisions shows while we do what we do. We’ll even let you borrow our noise-canceling headphones so you don’t have to hear the sounds of dentistry.
That brings us to another important point — you are in charge during your visit. We’ll be happy to dim the lights while your local anesthetic takes effect. We have blankets you can borrow to feel warm and cozy. And if you would like to take a break at any time during your treatment, just let us know.
Ask About Sedation Options
While our gentle approach is great for many people, you may want some added assurance that you will be pain-free during your visits. That’s why we also offer dental sedation at our practice.
Specifically, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation. You may know nitrous oxide as “laughing gas.” It’s a fast and effective way to help you stay calm and receive treatment without pain or worry. Oral sedation, which involves taking a dose of medicine prior to your appointment, is generally a stronger option. Its effects can last for a few hours, but you can feel confident that you won’t feel anything during your procedure.
You also should know that our own Dr. Monteiro is a member of DOCS, the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. She has a strong background and years of experience helping patients with sedation dentistry. If you do receive dental sedation, your vital signs will be monitored at all times to make sure you are safe and well.
