Take Care Of Your Gums To Protect Your Smile
If you like having teeth — and we’re betting that you do — then you need to take care of your gums.
You may not be aware of it, but gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. When your gums are infected, your smile is at risk. Today, close to half of all adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
As important as your teeth are, your gums play an equally important role in your oral health. This is why we encourage you to get regular dental cleanings and exams at our Jacksonville, FL dental office. It’s also why periodontal therapy is an essential part of what we do at River Oaks Dental.
If you suspect you might have infected gums, don’t wait to get help. Call 904-299-8951 today to make an appointment with us.
Look For The Signs
One thing to keep in mind is that gum disease doesn’t usually just appear overnight. It’s a gradual process, and you can often see the signs if you know what to look for. The sooner you recognize there is a problem, the sooner you can seek treatment, too.
Gingivitis is the early form of gum disease. The good news is that it’s reversible with basic brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups. The signs of gingivitis are red, swollen gums and gums that bleed when you brush or floss. If this is happening, it’s a good chance this means that you aren’t brushing and flossing as often or as well as you should. No judgments, just something to keep in mind if you start noticing the symptoms.
If you don’t do anything, your gingivitis could lead to periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease. We won’t explain the different kinds of periodontitis. Just know that all of them are bad for your oral health, but they are treatable.
In addition to red, swollen, and bleeding gums, you also may notice:
- Receding gums
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away
- Gums that feel tender or sore
- Loose teeth
- Changes in how your teeth fit together
Contact us immediately if you are having any of the symptoms mentioned above. This is not a time to wait and see what happens.
Get Your Gums In Shape
When we are sick or injured, we need time to heal. Then we can get back in shape. Likewise, infected gums need to be treated, then you can work with us to get them back to a healthy condition.
The type of periodontal therapy you need can depend on how severe your gum infection is. For some people scaling and root planing (a deeper cleaning that you get with a routine checkup) may be enough. Other patients may need an antibiotic to prevent harmful bacteria from causing reinfection.
Once you are healed, our team will work with you on a periodontal maintenance schedule. We don’t just want to get rid of your periodontal disease. We want your gums to get back to being as healthy as they can be.
